The radio station, Voz de Paz (Voice of Peace), started broadcasting programs in March 2015. The programs are centered on the concept of a culture of peace.

  • A culture of peace is an amalgamation of values, attitudes, traditions, behaviours and lifestyles based on:
  • A respect for life, an end to violence, a promotion and practice of non violence through education, dialogue and cooperation.
  • A respect for the independence and rights of each nation to govern itself and its own internal matters in conformity with the United Nations letters and international law.
  • A respect and promotion of human rights and freedoms, with an emphasis on solving conflicts by peaceful means.
  • A balance between development and the protection of the environment for future generations.
  • A respect and promotion for the right to development.
  • A respect and support for equal opportunities and rights for both men and women.
  • The right of individuals to freedom of expression and to information.
  • In summary, a culture of peace supports the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and between nations, all within an atmosphere of peace on a national and international plane.

The programs produced by the Radio are based on the above principals. The radio station is operated by nationals (residents of Cacine) who volunteer their time to produce programming. These nationals attended courses in programming and apprenticeships with Radio Sol Mansi, a long established radio station in Guinea Bissau, to prepare them for this work.

The Radio broadcasts daily. The transmissions reach all the Cacine Sector and beyond to two other Sectors and the area of the Guinea Conakry border. Programs include daily news from Cacine and the surrounding villages, positive health practices, environmental awareness and protection and music. One of the programs is “Children Speak” where children are interviewed about various topics of concern to them. Another program is “Voice of the Border” which highlights the shared events and concerns that occur along Guinea Bissau – Guinea Conakry border, which is located just kilometers away from Cacine. Each religious denomination in the area also has a regular broadcast.

The Radio was a very important tool in making the population aware of and educating them on the dangers of Ebola and its transmission. The Radio Station also organized seminars, with the support of UNICEF, in villages along the border with Guinea Conakry where Ebola is active, to instruct the population about Ebola and its prevention.

The programs are broadcast in various languages, including Creole, Susu, Balanta and Portuguese.
